Harwood Area and Community Information
Harwood lies eight miles northwest of Fargo, North Dakota. With the Sheyenne River to its west and the Red River of the North to the east, Harwood’s beautiful town site actually began as property owned by the historic Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1881, railroad officials decided to sell the land to a banker and developer named Harwood. The entrepreneur promptly platted the site and began encouraging settlers to move into the new community. Today Harwood’s 700 residents enjoy small town, suburban living while easily accessing Fargo’s nearby urban amenities.
Families looking at homes for sale in Harwood will learn about the city’s excellent public school system. In 2006, the hardworking students, parents and teachers of Harwood Elementary achieved the high honor of becoming a national Blue Ribbon School. Only 286 schools across the country have achieved this honor based on test scores, parental participation and many other factors. Along with the great public education system, owners of Harwood ND homes will find themselves close to Fargo's many technical schools, colleges and universities.
The town’s attractive city buildings and two wonderful community parks illustrate how well city leaders still work together for the good of all. Both parks offer playgrounds, picnic areas, softball fields, Frisbee golf, horseshoe pits, an ice skating rink and warming house. Harwood ND real estate sits near these great parks. When the weather gets too cold for park fun, community leaders step in to offer alternative activities for all ages. Running from December to April, the second Friday of each month becomes Movie Night at the Harwood Community Center. Family-oriented movies are shown complete with great popcorn and snacks. Harwood real estate lies near other regular winter activities including the weekly Cosmic Karaoke Bingo Games and local high school sports competitions. Harwood Homes for sale are near annual community events including a Buffalo Dinner, Miss Harwood competition, the much anticipated Community Days celebration and American Legion baseball, pee wee and T ball action. Buying real estate in Harwood puts your family near these great community events.
Several strong community groups work together to make Harwood better. Owners of Harwood homes can join and volunteer with the American Legion, the American Legion’s Auxiliary and the Homemaker's Club which began in 1923. Young family members can join the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H Club. Families looking at Harwood homes will enjoy participating in these great clubs. Budding actors will want to take part in the Harwood Prairie Playhouse. The playhouse offers interested locals the chance to take part in quality theatre productions. Another local group, the Rural Cass Snowmobile Club provides snowmobiling events for all ages. Plenty of fun activities await new owners of Harwood properties. Harwood home buyers will enjoy living in a low crime area with plenty of jobs, community events and an excellent educational system.
